What is Odyssey of the Mind?

Odyssey of the Mind (OotM) gives kids the opportunity to problem solve, write scripts, paint props, build contraptions and have creative fun. Students in grades K through 5 collaborate in teams of 5 to 7 to solve one of six OotM problems.  The kids solve the problem all on their own – the adults only facilitate.  There are no wrong answers in OotM and in fact, and the more creative and unique the answers are, the better.  For more information visit http://www.odysseyofthemind.com.

When does OotM start and what does it cost?

Registration is OPEN for the 2017-2018 school year. Click here to complete the registration form. The deadline for registration is Sept 30. In general, most OotM teams start to meet in early November.  Teams typically meet once or twice a week for a total of one to three hours. The cost is $80 per child to cover team registration and materials. The registration fee is waived for OotM Coordinators and Coaches' children. You may pay by check at any time or, online after your child is placed on a team. If you pay by check, please make checks payable to MSES PTO and put Odyssey of the Mind on the memo line of the check.

When do Odyssey teams meet?
The registration form asks for the student's availability.  The coaches use this information to assemble teams. They're looking for kids who are available to meet when they are available to coach.  Once teams have been formed, the team will have a meeting to finalize the details of when the team will meet.  The coach will have the final say on when and where the team will meet.

When do Odyssey teams compete?
Teams compete in the Region 16 Tournament -- date and location will be coming soon. If your child’s team wins, they would go on to the State Tournament (date and location coming soon).  If they continue to win they would go to the World Tournament (date and location coming soon).

How do parents help?
Every team must provide an adult coach, judge and volunteer. Coaches and judges will receive training from our local Odyssey of the Mind organization. Parent participation is key to the success of this program.

How do I sign up?

Click here to complete the registration form (deadline is Sept 30). The number of children who can participate will be determined by the number of parents who volunteer to coach.  If you want to guarantee your child a spot, sign up to be a coach!  Teams will be selected by the coaches.  Typically the coaches prioritize students whose parents can judge or volunteer for the team and whose availability matches their own.  We attempt to keep teams within one or two grade levels.

What does it mean to coach an Odyssey team?

Coaching Odyssey is unlike most clubs in that coaches are really only there to supervise the kids and to keep them on task.  The coaches can help mentor the team members through spontaneous practice but otherwise everything is done by the kids.  The kids develop the solution, write the script, create the costumes and props and perform their play without help from any adults.

A training will be provided by the region in November (alternate dates are available at other regions).  Our club will pay for coaches to attend this training.  Coaching resources are also available at our regional web site.

Additional resources are provided for our Moorefield OoTM coaches at http://odysseyhelp.com/ and/or you can also ask to join our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/msesootm/.
